Meet Koda !💕🐶

This beautiful boxer is turning 9 years young this November and has been settling in wonderfully since joining me in foster care a little over a week ago. If you’re interested in adopting a sweet lady like Koda, she is available through @h.o.p.e.animalrescue ! More info below and on their website!

Koda walks beautifully on leash, loves a good game of fetch, and never turns down a treat (that doesn’t mess with her allergies). Like many boxers, she has some food and environmental sensitivities that need to be managed to keep her comfortable and healthy. She’s also reactive toward other dogs, so she’d do best as the only pet in her home and with someone who can help her get distance on walks.

She’s fully potty trained but may piddle a little when she’s really excited, so it helps to let her settle or take her right outside before saying hi. Once she relaxes, she’s all about cuddles and rubbies. This sweet girl has so much love to give 💛

She’s been such an easy gal to foster, loves her walks and naps!

Rainy day adventures with Maggie & Pippa!☔️🐾
Maggie was working on settling around the ducks at the park. She tends to lunge at birds when she’s out, but she did so well as we approached them today. Pippa had a fun outing chasing toads (no toads were harmed), playing fetch, and enjoying some “find it” games!

I’ve decided to keep these going through July!! The dogs who have attended so far made solid progress, and it has been a great way for owners to support their pups in a calm and structured setting.

Each dog gets solo time in the yard to explore common triggers at their own pace.

Flirt pole fun!🤩

Beni’s owner loved watching him go after the flirt pole I brought to the consultation and quickly got to making one!🤣 A great way to help manage a reactive dog is to tire them out before putting the leash on and going for a walk. Flirt poles are an excellent way to mentally and physically tire a dog!

Meet Shelby🐾 this sweet Great Dane pup had a blast at todays session! We did an intro to loose leash walking, place & stay. During our session we also worked on having clear markers and commands/cues. It’s important to consistently communicate with our dogs in a way they understand to have successful sessions! So glad we were able to have a nice sunny day to practice outside, looking forward to training next week!

Over the years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of working in the rescue world—meeting dogs of all kinds! Big and small, young and old, sick and healthy… each one has left a lasting impact on my life.

People often say these dogs need us (which they do, pls consider adopting!!) , but I’ve needed them just as much. They’ve taught me how to be patient, the importance of trying to think like a dog, and what resilience looks like.

Today, I’m thinking extra about the rescue dogs that I’ve gotten the pleasure to know and remembering the dogs who have crossed the rainbow bridge. With each dog, there is a new lesson to be learned! They are the best teachers!

Meet Blue (left) and Oreo (right)! I had an amazing assessment last week for Mr.Oreo from @h.o.p.e.animalrescue ! Last week, Oreo and Blue had met for the first time (without me present) and while it went well, they both were full of energy! That extra energy + it being their first time meeting led to them getting into a little tiff during that initial meet and greet. Naturally, we wanted conduct another assessment to ensure it’s a good fit before moving forward and placing a dog into a home! This time we met at Blue’s house and made sure he was tired before and not full of the beans when Oreo arrived. Having that extra energy burnt off made a huge difference! Within 5 minutes of Oreos arrival, they were both doing their own thing, what we want to see! They also did well when toys and treats were added to the playdate! Overall, I saw everything I wanted to see during a dog intro!😃 Oreo is now in foster to adopt with Blue and all has been going well! Super excited for Oreo and can’t wait to watch him blossom! Hope to see him at some weekend workshops this summer!🌸

Love to see progress!🤗

When I first met Tayton, he was extremely reactive toward both people and other dogs. While he’s not aggressive, his reactions often made others feel uncomfortable, frustrated his handlers, and created potentially unsafe situations. Not only was he reactive, but he would also maintain a strong and steady pull for a majority of the walk.

I started meeting with Tayton and his owners twice a week to work on his loose leash walking and reactivity.

In this little clip, Tayton is on a long line sniffing the grass and choosing to ignore the person walking by. On my first walk with him, he would have lunged and barked at a person standing, forget about his reaction if they were running! I’m so happy to see him learning how to regulate his emotions especially as an older rescue. He’s a lucky boy to have found such dedicated and loving owners!

I often hear many trainers or owners focused on correcting a behavior instead of being interested in understanding to the root issue and showing your dog what you want from them. For example, when your dog is pulling on the leash… rewarding them at your side, where you want them will help teach your dog what you want compared to just consistently popping the leash when tension is added.

Odie had a structured walk today, he gets two a week! Spoiled boy!!🤗 We mainly worked on increasing handler engagement. We practiced leave it when we came across pizza crust and neutrality around other dogs walking. He did so well!! At the end, I put him on a long line and we did some fun agility jumps as well as a sniffari!

I’m not great at capturing my training sessions, especially if they are outside. This was the best I could do for today. 🤣

🐾 Duke- He has a long and upsetting past. This gentle giant has experienced crate trauma causing hip dysplasia, a broken tail, and a couple other unknown (at this time) issues. He is very sweet to new people and does well with young children. He walks well on the leash and is house trained.
🐾 Loki- This sweet boy is currently living with young children and does amazing with them! He’s a bit shy but doesn’t take long to warm up. This crate trained and potty trained boy is ready to move into someone’s home. He still has to be vetted and neutered.

LOOKING FOR A FUREVER HOME🐶🏠 (In foster)
🐶 Copper- This loving bundle of energy is looking for an active home that needs a new furry addition! Copper is good with other dogs and very food motivated. He’s a blast to train! This smart cookie would love to curl up in someone’s bed at night and accompany them on a fun hike during the day.
🐶 Shep- This affectionate doll is looking for a home to spend her golden years in. She does well with children and cats but would prefer to be the only dog. This lovely docile lady would make a perfect companion!
🐶 Tatyton- This playful boy has a heart of gold! He does well with other dogs. We are currently working on his leash manners but otherwise he has been a great and loving guest at his fosters.
🐶 Bella- This gem would thrive in a calm household with no cats and as an only dog. Although she would prefer to be the only pet, she does well with children.
🐶 Kai- This pitty is stable! He does soo well meeting new people, getting his nails cut, receiving a bath, seeing dogs on a leash, etc. This lovely potato has lived with other dogs and children before, we are told he does not like cats.

A lick mat is a great tool for working on cooperative care! These easy to store silicone mats may be a bit harder to clean than a Kong but the ridges have a purpose!

Many lick mats come with a way to secure them on the ground, wall, or crate. The suction cup backing makes them a great distraction for your dog during grooming sessions, while the screw-on backs allow for easy attachment to a kennel for crate training. If you have a shredder at home, be sure to supervise them when using a lick mat.

DIY FLIRTPOLE!

If you know me, you know I love DIY projects and crafts! Learn how to make a flirt pole for less than $10 in less than 2 minutes. Once you have gathered all the materials needed, it’s super quick and easy. You’ll have a functional flirt pole in no time! Each client receives a flirt pole or snuffle mat with the purchase of a training program! Train with Channeling Canines to skip the drilling and get a free enrichment tool!!

All the items in this video were purchased at Home Depot. I’m a dog trainer, not Bob the Builder, so the proper terminology and safety protocols may not be used correctly (or at all) in the video or caption. 😂 However, you should still get the idea!

Materials used in this video-
• 3/4” PVC cap ($0.82 ea)
• 3/4” x 10’ PVC pipe ($6.29)
• 1/8” x 50’ rope ($5.23)
• 3/16” drill bit ($3.97)

Tips when making it:
• Add (hot, gorilla, crazy, etc.) glue or (duck, electric, etc.) tape to secure the PVC pipe cap. You can also heat up the PVC in hot water before connecting to get a super snug fit. You want the cap to be stuck on there!!
• Try using a bungee cord instead of traditional rope. I don’t know what traditional rope really is, but having some elasticity is a plus.
• The rope length is easily adjustable. Take the cap off and tie a knot at your desired length.
• Make sure your drill bit is turning clockwise. If it gets a little stuck, turn the bit counter clockwise to remove it.
• After adjusting the loop to your preferred size, make sure your knot is super tight.
• For large breeds: 3/4” - 1’ x 3’ - 4’ PVC pipe and 1/4” - 1/2’ x 4’ - 6’ rope.

Tips when using it:
• Keep the toy on the ground.
• Slightly wiggle the toy instead of waving it around in their face.
• Allow them to win the toy, don’t keep it from them the whole game, that’s not fun.
• Occasionally jerk the toy forward just before the dog gets it.

Met up with an old client of mine today! I love visiting WestChester because I’m able to see some adorable faces that I miss so much! Took sweet Lucy for a walk today after receiving some loving hello kisses and wiggles :) We found a patch of snow in the park fulllll of bunny trails so of course I had to let Lucy explore. When we got back to her house after a fun and engaging walk, we played with the flirt pole and finished the visit off with a kibble scatter in the snow. I had a blast seeing her again!

Took sweet Lucy for a walk today after receiving some loving hello kisses and wiggles :) We found a patch of snow in the park fulllll of bunny trails so of course I had to let Lucy explore. When we got back to her house after a fun and engaging walk, we played with the flirt pole and finished the visit off with a kibble scatter in the snow. I had a blast seeing her again!
